A receipt for the Mange

Half a pound of Bowl armoniac

Half a ditto of Brimstone and one ounce of alum, finely powdered. Half a pint of Train oil, one gallon of Stale urine or Cow piss.

The above Ingredients to be boyl’d just up and then made use of.

N.B. To be rubbed in with a stiff Brush.

A Liquid Blacking for Shoes and Boots, viz:

Take two ounces of brown sugar, dissolve it in a pint of schim Milk or less after trying you find it to be thin, when cold stir in two ounces of the best Ivory black.

N.B. Always to be ffired before using

Came to Mrs Hoddinot’s at Sherborne to Board. Conditions as follows, to wit; - to give Forty-five Guineas pr. Annm. For myself and Servant, I am to find my own Tea and Sugar, Washing and Fire and Candle in my Room.

A pound of bees wax, three quarters of a pound of Ivory black, two ounces of Candy, a pound of soft soap, two or threepennyworth of Gum, half a pound of yellow soap, all the above ingredients, except ye blacking, to be melted before ye Ivory is to be put in.

For Mahogany Tables

A pint of Cold drawn linseed oil

A pennyworth of Alkanett root

2 pennyworth of Rose pink

Mix the above in an earthen pan, let it stand all night, rub it upon the Tables, let it remain on all night and in the morning rub it with a clean linings cloth, continuing it until the Tables are in order.

Christian Lidford came to live with me as a housekeeper, wages Eight Guineas per annm.

Agreed with Robert Gummer for a year ? as follows, Wages Eight Quineas per Annum, to give Clothes in manner following, great Coat and suit of Livery with pr of boots, hat, frock and waistcoat, leather breeches and stable Jacket. The whole and every part to be wore as ?long as decent of which I am to be the judge and if he quits my service before the sd. Cloaths are wore out not to take them away without my permission. To give or take a clear months Notice previous to the expiration of the year.

 

1783/4

The following remedy has been administered with good success in the cure of the present epidemical disorder of the bowels, stomach and blood ?flux:

?caluned magnesin alba half a drachm, Turkey rhubarb 12 grains, ginger grated 6 grains to be taken in a large tea cup full of peppermint water when going to bed. It seldom fails the first time taking, but if it should repeat the next night but one.

Agreed with Charles Hodder babr. To shave and dress my hair twice a week at 7s 6d per Quarter.

A Receipt to make Vinigar

Take Three Quarts of boiling water, let it stand till cold. The take one quart of full ripe chrystal gooseberries, mash them very well, and add to the water and gooseberries one pound and a quarter of common brown Sugar. Let the whole remain together twenty four hours – after this your mash must be starined thro’ a fine Cloth and the thro’ a Flannel which, being done, fill your Cask and put it in a warm place covering the Bung with a thin Cloth to keep out Flies etc.

You may use it at the End of nine months, and make in the same proportion what quantity you please.

Sent Sarah Old to Wm. Gaylor’s to School at Ten Quineas per annum to attend

Mr King’s School for the purpose of Instrn. In reading, writing and arithmetick at 24 shillings a year. Mrs Gaylor to give her 3d per wk. For pocket money.

 

Ye 15 May 1790

Sent Sarah Old to Mrs Jinnings at Bridport a half Boarder at Eleven pounds and Three shilling per annm. Writing and Arithmetick to be paid for exclusive of Board. Mrs Jinnings to give her 3d per week for pocket Money.

Paid 17/-, next payment of 17/- 24 June 1784 -

his now dwelling House only situated as aforesaid, Timber and Tiled not exceeding Three hundred pounds. Household Goods therein only not exceeding Two hundred Pounds. Stable only separate, Stone and Tiled not exceeding One hundred Pounds.

Will – made 14.2.1791, proved 31.5.1794

Thomas Gollop of Sherborne… Give and bequeath unto my loving wife Jane £50 paid her immediately after my decease…In addition to what already secured to her … sum of £50 to be pd. By equal half yearly payments during her natural life, Midsummer and Christmas

Gives also freehold farm at Strode, p’sh of Netherbury, now rented by Mr John Clare, Dwelling house in Sherborne with gardens, ?shellhouse, outhouses, buildings, stable and Tenements in Hound Street, all stock of Liquors, full and free use of household goods, furniture, implements, plate, linen Books, china – inventory to be taken at his death.

At present has no child (?by his marriage)

Henry Petty of Evershot, woolstapler, and Peter Batson of Sherborne, attornay at Law, to manage lands for any children.

Farm at Lillington settled on his wife previous to their marriage. If no children, to go to John Petty, nephew, son of Henry Petty, £500 to niece Susannah Petty, daughter of Henry Petty.

Asks to be buried in Chancel at Lillington.

Codicil:

Nominates Revd. James Hawkins of fframpton as joint trustee with Petty and Batson

Asks that his wife should enjoy Lands and Tenements in Sherborne without Rates, Taxes, Repairs. Gives wife Gold watch chain and seals. Silver teapot and stand, cream urn to do with as she shall think proper.

Bequests to Sarah Old , natural daughter, annuity of £5 yearly until she is of full age of 30 years. Then £100. If she marries with the consent of the Trustees, £100 on the day of her marriage instead of at 30, then £5 yearly annuity ceases.
