Hinton St Mary Parish Dorset

Photographs ©Lynda Mudle-Small, March 2003	Hinton St Mary (Haintune in the Domesday Book) is a parish near the River Stour, 1 mile north of Sturminster Newton. The Parishes of Marnhull and Sturminster Newton are to the north and south and the parish of Manston the the east. The history of the village dates back to Roman times and a mosaic pavement found here is famous. The church of St Peter is a stone building in the Perpendicular style, being completely rebuilt in 1846.
The church registers date from 1581. In 1895 there was a Primitive Methodist chapel in the parish. The fine Manor House and the church stand side by side. The soil is clay and limestone with the main crops during the 19th century being wheat, barley, roots and pasture. The area is 982 acres and in 1895 there was a National School for 70 children. The population in 1851 was 345; in 1861, 342; 1871, 328; 1881, 296; 1891, 252; 237 in 1931 and 250 in 2001.
