The church of St Peter from the road or north side | The church from the south side. With the exception of the tower it was rebuilt in 1846. |
On the tower are some interesting gargoyles. | The White Horse Inn, at Hinton St Mary |
This wonderful old photograph, courtesy of Ann White shows Church Road as it approaches the junction. The building opposite is the White Horse Inn that can be seen in the picture above.
Hinton House viewed from the church yard and from the entrance gate. Prior to the reformation this was a convent attached to the Abbey of Shaston. It was rebuilt by the Freke family
The large medieval tithe barn within the grounds of Hinton House has been converted into a theatre. | An incongruouse location for the old village stocks - above a notice board for the Millennium Garden. |
Left. The village of
Hinton St Mary has been described as being in two halves, with the
poorer housing along the Sturminster Newton to Marnhull road, and the
more substantial cottages to the east of it.
Below is another photo from Ann White showing Marnhull Road. It shows her Grandmother walking down the road in the white pinafore dress and her sister is sitting on the wall of their cottage. The writing on the back refers to "Old Mr Short is dead, he died this morning" and the postmark could be 1908 |

Left. Another photograph from Ann White showing the Post Office. Does anyone know if this building is still there?
