Rounded figures are more likely to indicate an estimation. For example the ages of the first 3 tenants listed below are given as 'about 60, 70 and 40' - Where we become aware of other relevent info e.g. we have his/her baptism comment will be added to the notes and a refined date added in brackets if different]

[Note:- Added by Mike Russell OPC:- Here John GOULD's age is given as being 60 (i.e.born c1555) . His age however is also given in the 1623 Visitation of Dorset as being "aet. 65 sup'stes 1623" (i.e. age 65 survivng in 1623 - i.e. born c1558) which is more likely to be accurate as submitted to the Herald at the Visitation by his 2nd son James Gould then aged 30 who would have been 22 in 1615.

John Gould the Elder died on 13th June 1630 (recorded in his nephew William Whiteways diary) Link to transcription of his Will note Genealogical notes providing background to his ancestry and details of descendants etc. 2nd life was his son John Gould the Younger (1590-1643).

Link to his widowed daughter-in-law Sarah GOULD in 1650 Survey for Fordington Manor - same holding of 63 acres made up of 4 acres of meadow and pasture and 59 acres of arable land, with a tenement granted by Queen Elizabeth I on 14th Sep 1596 to John Gould the Elder. As she is in possession of the tenement and plot by virtue of her widowhood the second life must have referred to her husband who according to the 1623 visitation of Dorset was born c1590 i.e. aged about 25.

[Note:- Added by Mike Russell OPC:- I have checked from 1500 to after the restoration and there is no family anywhere in Fordington (or Dorchester) with the surname Barons, so as expected this refers to William BARNES Senior (1545-1620). Follow link for more information about the Barnes Family. William Barnes sen was buried FStG 19 June 1620 (aged 75)  Link to Survey of Fordington Manor in 1650 to a William Barnes (born c1590) granted a copyhold of 56.3 acres in 1639 for 3 lives, himself age 60 (c1590) , Robt his brother age 57 (c1593) and his son Anthony age 28 (c1622) . Same plot inherited by William Barnes the son of William Barnes bap at FStG 25th Nov 1587
+  Tomasine Windsore    tent  56.3.0 xviijs vd 40.32.10. xvijl vjs   1575 (1573) Link to a cottage also held by Tomasine standing in 8 square perch of land shown below. Tamsine Windsor/Wyndzer wrote her Will in 1649 and the inventory of her goods confirms she died in the year 1655. Her Will refers to son John Windsor and names two of his four children as John and Tamsin.  Tomasine's husband William Windsor was buried FStG 25 Feb 1607/08. Link to 'Thomasin the relict of William Windsor' in the 1650 Survey, Her husband's copyhold dated 12 May 5 Jac: [1606/7] was for '2 acres and ½ of Meddow & pasture and 53 acres of Arable' consistent with Tomasine's  here.

[Note:- Added by Mike Russell OPC:- Her age in 1615 was given as 40, and 35 years later as 60? Tamsine was the 7th child of John WHITE Senior by his wife Elizabeth Bascombe. Link to an account of her life and children. Thomasin's original birth estimate of 1573 took account of her 6 older siblings, wills, adminsitrations and known baptisms in her family inc her own 3 children. Her eldest son John was bap at FStG on 2nd June 1604 and is with her in 1650 when his age is said to be 43 when actually 46. His age is not too far out and the 1615 estimate for Thomasine being born c1575 compares well with our earlier estimate of 1573. Clearly she cannot have been aged 60 in 1650 (not least because she would have been only 12 when her eldest son was born) so I have chosen to stick with 1573/5.

[Note:- Added by Mike Russell OPC:- *When the Survey was originally drawn up it showed 2 lives of 60 & 45. They appear to have been rather carelessly crossed out, and in my view are at variance to the very careful precise script of the original entries suggesting a different hand and later alteration. I think the intention was to just delete the 45 replacing it with 33. The 60 would then still be applying to Hamnet's age giving a birth date of 1555 which would be in line with chapter 3.5 of the Bio on Hamnet WHITE which estimated his birth date as 1561 (bear in mind the fact that many of the ages given in the Surveys have quite clearly been estimated with a preponderance of ages ending 5 or zero and we are unaware of any other individuals named Hamnet White) My own estimates of birth dates for his siblings are also an estimation and may well be a few years out. The clincher to me is that Hamnet's 1st wife Joan died in Sep 1608 and he remarried on 28th Feb 1608/9 to Christian Barnes providing a valid reason as to why the 2nd life needed to be changed to 33 (1582). We have similar complications in estimating when Christian BARNES was born - see my comments on her family Bio via this link. This plot is still held by Christian WHITE nee BARNES in the 1650 Survey of Fordington Manor

William Bird (c1555-1643) was the son of John & Margaret BIRD and holds the same plot in the 1600 Survey of Fordington Manor by copyhold dated c 1557/8 . It was initally granted to his father John BIRD and on his death passed to his mother Margaret by 1607 William had inherited it from his mother by custom of the manor. He married Thomasin Palmer in Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 6th Jan 1577 when he would have been aged abt 22, and appears to have returned to live in his tenement at Fordington working his 61 acre plot. I suspect the 1600 Survey triggered the need to formally surrender the copyhold and take a new one for 3 lives being himself Thomasin and his heir. Although I cannot locate her burial I think Thomasin died leaving by 1615 the two lives recorded here. He was by 1615 clearly respected having been churchwarden at FStG for many years (signing the Bishops Transcripts for example in the years 1594, 1606-1608 inc.). It was traditional to marry in the brides parish which may mean she was returned to Holy Trinity for burial but I have found no trace anywhere. William may well be the 'BIRD Senior' buried at Holy Trinity on 9th Sep 1643 where the Christian name is illegible, if correct he would have been 88 years old.

Their son, a clothier by trade, died and was buried at FStG on 23rd March 1628/9 when he would have been aged 22. He clearly died intestate and I think his father must have died as well as administration of his estate was granted to his mother Katherine and her accompt has survived along with an inventory of her sons goods.Link to L/A & Inventory etc. I think her husband was alive in Feb 1608/9 when their sevant Judith was buried at FStG and probably died during 1609 to 1613 when parish registers are missing. Katherine BITHGOOD was buried at FStG on 28th Aug 1638.

Thomas Winsor the elder was buried FStG 14 Jan 1623/24 (aged 68) See (4) Below    Or   Thomas Winsor was buried FStG 15 Sept 1630 probably (5) Below..

Note:- Added by Mike Russell OPC:- There have been many Thomas WINSOR's and with so many records missing it is difficult to be sure of relationships especially if some are descended from siblings. I have identified some records and given my currect thoughts but these need to be reviewed as any new information comes to light:- [Jan 2024 - Now have 1600 survey - appears to be 4 below but still need to recheck linkages and comments on all these reords and adjust text]

(1) a Thomas WINSOR the Elder (bur 1557) described as 'an aged man' was buried at FStG on 16th Mar 1557/8. He may be a progenitor of (3) below

(2) a Thomas WYNSOR of West Burton , Dorset (a tything within the Manor of Fordington)  (son and heir of John Wynsor, late of Wynfrythe Newboroughe, Dorset, deceased, and of Alice, his wife, daughter and heir apparent of a certain John Brigger), for 43 sh. sells by indenture to Owin Hayman, of Dorchester, barbour, and his heirs, his burgage on the south side of Durnelane, Dorchester. Dated 10th June 1561 (See Charter 656 Municipal Records of Dorchester) Clearly living in 1561 and another possible progenitor of those that follow.

(3) a Thomas WYNSOR junior married a Julian BISHOP on 4th Feb 1578 at FStG & they raised a family of half a dozen children or so between 1578 & 1592. We have traced 3 of their children (follow link) and one is a son Thomas WINSOR bap FStG on 7th Apr 1592. Julian WINSOR nee Bishop was buried at FStG on 19th May 1625 when she was described as a Widow. Thomas WINSOR Junior therefore died between 1592 and 1625 whilst still married to Julian. As he predeceased Julian he can't be the Thomas Winsor that died in 1630. I suspect therefore that he is in fact the Thomas WINSOR the elder that died in 1623/4 and the Thomas WINSOR that appears here in the 1615 Survey of Fordington Manor born c1555 aged 68 at death. As he had a son Thomas in 1592 it is unlikly that by 1623, some 45 years after his marriage, he would continue to be referred to as Thomas WINSOR Junior and even possible that his son now aged 31 had remarried and had his own son and therefore referred to as the elder, but I have not so far located such a marriage or children. The other lives quoted are likely to be his surviving male heirs. The only guide we have is those we know of , William who would be 30 and Thomas 23 so roughly the right ballpark..

(4) a Thomas WINSOR the elder (d.1591) a husbandman of Fordington died in Apr/May 1591 leaving a Will and Inventory of his goods. From the Will all we know is that he left a widow Katherine and a son Thomas WINSOR who shared his estate. His will refers to only just over 5 acres of ground 2 horses a cow and a cart so quite small compared to many in the survey. No evidence to date of any direct relationship to 2 above.

(5) a Thomas WINSOR married Elynor MABEE at FStG on 21st Sep 1606 & they raise a family of half a dozen children or so between 1607 and 1623. We know of 4 children and the 3rd is a son Thomas WINSOR bap 18th Nov 1618.   He is probably the Thomas Winsor who was appointed Constable of Fordington at the Quarter Sessions on 14th apr 1629 and the Thomas WINSOR buried at FStG 15 Sept 1630.

(6) a Thomas WINSORE married Joane PURCHASE at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 24th Jan 1619. His wife Joane was the daughter of Nicholas PURCHASE who was buried at HT on 15th Mar 1619/20 leaving a Nuncupative Will proved 27 May 1620.
